New No More Heroes Desperate Struggle Trailer is full of awesome, Suda

A few observations after watching the newest “No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle” trailer:

  • Suda’s voice goes lower when he talks about the game because he loves it so much.
  • Travis’ new beam-katana is very long.
  • The 80s are making a comeback.
  • Fierce waggle-ing scares girls.

Go watch it after the break, it won’t get much better than this, ever. continue reading →

Nintendo’s Denise Kaigler doesn’t get it

In an interview with Wired Denise Kaigler, VP of corporate affairs at Nintendo, talks about hardcore third party games finding little to no success on the Wii:

You know, I don’t know. It’s hard to say. It could be titles have the same type of sales curve that a lot of Nintendo titles have. A lot of Nintendo titles don’t follow that traditional sales curve where they launch big and then that’s it. Our titles have a long tail. They build in popularity, and this could be the case with, as you mentioned, MadWorld and The Conduit. I’ve played both. I’m not a core gamer, and I found that they were challenging and fun. We’re hopeful that the titles will catch on and that consumers who already have those games will spread the word and others will follow suit there. They’re deep experiences, and they’re very challenging titles, and we certainly like them. But it’s our hope that the games will pick up in popularity and they’ll continue to sell.

I know, It’s easy to say: “MadWorld” was niche, “The Conduit” was garbage. “TimeShift” probably didn’t set the world on fire either, but you don’t see those guys complaining.

Nintendo’s press conference was not a complete disaster, bringing the announcements of a 4-player New Mario Bros. for Wii, Mario Galaxy 2 (this time with Yoshi!) but also, probably the biggest surprise of this E3, a brand new entry into the Metroid franchise, Metroid Other M, developed by none other than Team Ninja, coming in 2010. Stoked!

Fatal Frame 4 not headed to Europe [Comments Off]

It seems that after a year long desperate struggle the fate of Tecmo and Grasshopper Manufacture developed Fatal Frame 4 has been decided. The 4th entry into the Project Zero series will remain exclusive to Japan.

While it is very reasonable to be upset about this, allegedly Nintendo decided not to publish the game because Tecmo would not fix the bugs that plague the japanese version to this day. Given the fact that Nintendo owns the publishing rights, 3rd parties will most likely not be able to publish the game.

Thankfully, a fan translation is on it’s way, so people desperate to play the game (hi!), will be able to do so within months. You can see their current progress over at The Camera’s Lens Forums. You will probably want to hack your Wii and import the japanese release of Fatal Frame 4 to make this work.

While this is a bum out indeed, Xseed is still set to publish the Ju-On (The Grudge) game in the US, and Rising Star Games handling publishing duties in Europe — if you are looking for a horror fix.
