Sony handing out more freebies for Euro PSPgo buyers

If you are one of the few but proud(!) owners of one of these shiny babies, you can now log onto the PSN store, download a new theme and chose one of three games to download for free.

Inhabitants of German speaking territoriescan choose between “LittleBigPlanet”, “Gran Turismo” and “MotoStorm: Arctic Edge”, while other territories get “Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines” instead of “LittleBigPlanet”. Bummer, that.

After downloading the theme, you should be getting your code to redeem the games in the mail within a week. A month, if all things go wrong. That’s 5 free games so far if you are keeping count.

Sony adds facebook to PS3, fails

I think most of you can still remember that it was a reasonably big deal when Microsoft announced that facebook will launch on Xbox 360 at this year’s E3. 1 day after that became available, Sony quietly released their facebook implementation, which clearly shows why Sony has been so mum about this: It is a total train-wreck, a literal waste of everyone’s time and (Sony’s) money.

Instead of doing the smart thing, and adding Photos, Videos and a Live Feed into the XMB, Sony decided that all the console does is mini-blog anything of note you do on the PS3: buy items on the PSN Store, publish what Trophies you have earned and inform the world about certain actions you have performed in game.

In order to actually look at facebook, you will still have to use the PS3’s built in browser — which is a far cry from awful, but not exactly the smoothest implementation yet.

Firmware 3.10, which includes the facebook implementation, launches today adding a few other features not really of note. Watch Eric Lempel give you a guide after the break, courtesy of the PlayStation.blog.

Little Big Planet 2 unlikely? [1]

Little Big Planet 2 unlikely?

It seems that Media Molecule is not at work on a sequel to PlayStation 3 smash hit “LittleBigPlanet”, even going as far as saying a sequel would be counterproductive:

Martin Lynagh: “I think what you’ve seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that’s the way it’s going to continue.”

This is implying that “LBP” will be kept alive through DLC. We’re fine with that. Critical Gamer has the full thing.

Cage confirms Heavy Rain Demo

David Cage has confirmed to G4 that next year’s PS3 standout title “Heavy Rain” will indeed have a playable demo, what the contents of it will be however, is not yet confirmed:

“We are currently working on a demo, which is a real challenge. Finding one scene that can convey what we are trying to achieve with Heavy Rain is something really difficult. If we show an action scene, some players will think that this is what Heavy Rain is all about, and it is the same thing if we show an exploration scene. The problem is that each scene of the game offers contextual game play, which is something very difficult to explain and convey in a single demo. Demos are often a double-edge thing: if you don’t release one, players may think that you have something to hide.”

While we are fairly certain this can only end in failure, we applaud David Cage’s bravery. We found the game to be quite fantastic.

Heavy Rain is coming exclusively to PlayStation 3 in spring 2010.

A Crack in Time will probably be Insomniac’s last 60fps game [Comments Off]

A Crack in Time will probably be Insomniac’s last 60fps game

Insomniac’s Mike Acton ponders ‘How much does framerate matter?‘ His conclusion? Not much: Pretty graphics are more important to both reviewers and, more importantly, buyers. However, while developers may compromise in terms of framerate, it should be solid:

A solid framerate is still a sign of professional, well-made product. When there is a trade-off for framerate, it needs to be clearly worth it. i.e. It must introduce clear improvements on what the player sees, and never used as an excuse to not optimize the game or art.

Considering “Resistance” runs at 30fps, it’d probably be easier for Insomniac to consolidate the tech even further, although it makes me nauseous to think of “Ratchet & Clank” with even more details, hell, there’s almost too much going on in “A Crack in Time” with the game looking almost too good.

Check out Mike’s article for a more detailed breakdown, with all kinds of charts and data. It’s wonderful, really.

Insomniac: Fans think Resistance 2 was a failure

“Resistance 2″ was one of the biggest PlayStation 3 titles last holiday season. While it performed relatively well and garnered good reviews, most fans were still disappointed with the series’ progression to ape “Modern Warfare” with a lot of it’s design choices. In an Interview with VideoGamer, Insomniac’s James Stevenson explains why Insomniac thinks they have failed their fans:

“The critics loved Resistance 2. Some people didn’t like it, but for the most part… And the Metacritic’s higher than Resistance 1. So we got better reviews than Resistance 1, but the overall opinion of it is that it was a failure by fans, that Resistance 2 was a failure, because maybe the expectations were so high for it.

But that weights on you more. We talk to journalists a lot but we deal with our fans every day – and when they are disappointed… Reviewers are playing lots of games. They’re supposed to be critical.”

There’s always “Resistance 3″ to make up for that. Pull a “Devil May Cry”, Insomniac!
