Ballmer: Xbox 360 getting blu-ray; Digital-Foundry: makes no sense [Comments Off]
While a Blu-Ray drive will never be in the Xbox 360, Ballmer confirmed today that you will be able to buy one to add to your existing console:
Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.
Ballmer really does not want you to buy that PS3. However, the announcement was faced with scepticism early on, as DigitalFoundry’s Richard Leadbetter points out:
HD-DVD handled 30Mbps max, while Blu-ray ups the ante to 50Mbps. At the time of the HD-DVD add-on’s launch, Microsoft talked about how a combination of both CPU and GPU power was required to handle the decoding. Assuming there’s no overhead in the code, it could require significant re-engineering to get it up to BD specs.
This is just one from the laundry list of reasons he deems it unlikely.
While Microsoft certainly is no stranger to adding accessories to the Xbox 360, this move seems highly unlikely, given that the company has often stretched that they believe that digital distribution is the future for movies on consoles, offering solutions such as Netflix Streaming, Video on Demand, and soon, the Zune Marketplace on Xbox 360.
Xbox 360 Facebook and Twitter on Video [Comments Off]
Social networking is one of, if not the main feature of the next Xbox 360 Dashboard update coming this November. Stephen Totilo from Kotaku went hands on with the new update and posted some videos based on his experience with the 360’s rendition of Facebook and Twitter.
The applications themselves seem to be fairly decent, but you will probably want a chat-pad or a USB-keyboard if you are planning on using them extensively.
DigitalFoundry takes a look at ODST [Comments Off]
While venturing into uncharted territory for the “Halo” franchise, at it’s core, “Halo 3: ODST” is still powered by the same and slightly disappointing tech that brought us “Halo 3″ in 2007. Digital Foundry takes a close look at the technology employed in “ODST” and deducts what the advancements can mean for “Halo: Reach”.
Forza 3 evokes Microsoft’s Banhammer [6]
Ok, I don’t know how to tell you this, ok, let’s just rip it off like a band-aid, shall we?
If you have pirated “Forza Motorsport 3″ then you will probably need to buy a new Xbox 360.
If Turn 10 community manager Che ‘chespace’ Chou’s post on NeoGAF is to be believed, Microsoft is currently building a list of users who had pre-release access to the game:
Hey, APB to all the folks on NeoGAF that I sent green discs to in both U.S. and Europe.
Send me a PM with your gamertag. Trust me, you want to do this soon. [cheerful emoticon]
We are assuming that the term ‘green disc’ refers to a pre-release copy of the game, as they are primarily of the colour green.
Oh, and consider this a personal scolding: You are the reason why we can’t have nice things.
Future Epic Games will have “some” NATAL support [Comments Off]
Mark Rein talked to OXM about Project Natal that can best be summed up with “I have no clue” and “yeah we’ll do some stuff with it”.
I have no idea what we’re going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it’s definitely cool stuff and we will support it. I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support. We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform.
Can you feel the excitement? No? Too bad, because Rein might actually like NATAL:
Yeah, I can totally see myself sitting in front of my TV using Natal to play games like Gears of War, Call of Duty, or whatever first-person shooter with my buddies. I want to do a hand signal that tells my friend, “Go over there.” Instead of even saying it on Live, I just want to motion, “Go over there.” Or if I want to throw a grenade, I just lift my right hand off the controller, throw the grenade, then put my hand back on the controller.
I wonder if Mark Rein has ever played “Modern Warfare”… I reckon that the time it takes to physically throw a grenade compared to pushing RB might get you killed, and let me tell you, “Modern Warfare” is all about not letting that happen.
Yes, that’s definitely over 9000 copies of ODST sold [Comments Off]
Frankie O’Conner from 343 Industries, the Microsoft Division responsible for the “Halo” Franchise, just went on record over at USA Today and told them that “Halo 3: ODST” sold more than 2,5 million copies. We reckon that’s still too few considering just how good “ODST” really is, but at least it shows that fans of “Halo” are open for innovation.
Fresh Alan Wake Screens from TGS [Comments Off]
After the resurfacing of “Alan Wake” this year at E3, you simply can’t go anywhere without Remedy shoving the game in your face. Except GamesCom, where the game was mysteriously absent. Hooray for TGS then, as Remedy not only released new screenshots, but let a few journos lay their eyes on a chase-scene.
Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo was there, and seemed to like it:
Some had complained that the introduction of possessed enemies into the game’s action at E3 had exposed the grown-up thriller they wanted Alan Wake to be as merely another horror shooter full of monsters. The Remedy developers said not to worry.
“We don’t have crab monsters or giant spiders,” Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne told me. “We don’t want to take it too far and have these all-powerful monsters coming at you.” [...] He referred to potential Alan Wake customers as gamers who are “a bit more mature” and said they would be satisfied
Remedy seem to get it. Next year’s still far, though, so until then, hit the jump for our all-gorgeous 720p gallery of epic awesomeoness. Seriously, no hyperbole here.
Who’s your Daddy, EA?! [Comments Off]
Microsoft will be… or at least that’s what the rumor is. Last rumor we caught about Microsoft wanting to buy another company, it was Yahoo!. People doubted and questioned, but it turned out to be true. Evidently this was reason enough for EA stock to jump 5.2% to $19.36 and Microsoft stock rose 0.9% to a whopping $26.
Who’s to say it’s true? Microsoft and EA are, or would, or … should be? Can? Will have had done to the … did? I just confused myself. Anyway, we’ve contacted Microsoft and we’ll let you know as soon as we know what’s up.
