Matt Matthews analyzes the June NPDs for Gamasutra.

It is key to understand that the industry could probably never have sustained the kind of growth it experienced beginning in the second half of 2006, continuing through the end of 2008. From that perspective, the revenues being seen in 2009 could be the result of a correction in the market which will lay the foundation for more modest, healthy increases over the next year.

Not as grim as you think.

Brian Crecente on Microsofts XBL Moderation policy.

“Our forbidden names list is many thousands now,” said Stephen Toulouse, program manager in charge of policy and enforcement for Xbox Live. ” Language takes on new meanings daily.

“My team spends a lot of time learning as slang evolves, as the Internet drives new communications. We have to work very hard to be abreast on those sorts of things.”

I bet if I made an account called “abreast”, I’d get banned. Hypocrite. Joking aside, very interesting read.

Are Motion Controls superior? [Comments Off]

Stephen Totilo muses about Nintendo’s motion control successes and short-comings.

A shake of a hand replaces what could have been the press of a button. In game after game, motion control presents a different option, but one that seldom seems better.
As right as Nintendo was about so many things, maybe it was wrong about this.

Stephen is right on the money — again. Personally, all I want out of my Wii is No More Heroes 2, which will have perfectly good, as in a minimal amount of, motion controls.

Console bar-mitzvah, spooky, scary. Apple TV turning into a console? [Comments Off]

PC World and Pachter seem to believe so.

“The ‘Trojan horse’ is that the device would be an Internet access hub, and that they could then sell movies and other products. What Apple cares about is getting into the living room, and an Apple TV with games has a higher likelihood of succeeding than an Apple TV without,” Pachter added.

As far as games are considered, I still think it was a mixture of ubiquity and luck that the iPhone turned out to be as successful as it is. The fact that the Apple TV is considerably weaker than both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 isn’t helping either… their headstart non-withstanding.

Which Fall/Holiday Game will flop? [Comments Off]

As found on NeoGAF.

many games got delayed because fall/holiday got pretty packed. on the other side there is still a huge bunch of games which comes out in the next few months. i wonder which of them might bomb.

A few too many many mentions of BrĂ¼tal Legend for my tastes, and lots of GAFfers wishing bad luck to Activision titles. Modern Warfare 2 actually might end up negatively affecting the sales of everything else this holiday season — hardly Infinty Ward’s fault though. Maybe that Bayonetta delay to 2010 was for the best.
