id’s Rage might ship without dedicated servers

id’s flagship title “Rage” might not feature dedicated servers on the PC, just like “Modern Warfare 2″, John Carmack announced today speaking to Variety’s The Cut Scene.

“It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers. The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that,” he says. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”

Splendidly, that’s how.

Just to put this in perspective for non-PC gamers out there: This is as if your mom had just breastfed you with poison.

Mass Effect 2 gets Collector’s Edition

We’re officially declaring bankruptcy. Not only are a bazillion of noteworthy games coming out early 2010, but when some release with an actually nice Collector’s Edition such as “Mass Effect 2″, we can’t help but live on ramen and tap water until the summer. Here’s what comes in the box:

  • A tin box
  • An art book
  • A making-of DVD
  • Issue 1 of the Mass Effect: Redemption comic
  • Exclusive weapons and armor

It will set you back 10 bucks more than the regular edition for your respective platform of choice. That’d be Xbox 360 or PC, PS3 owners. That is if you live in North America. No pricing or availability has been announced for Europe so far. At least not in our inbox.

Bad Company 2 Special Edition revealed

Good news first: You won’t have to pony up any extra cash to get your hands on the special edition of “Battlefield: Bad Company 2″; the bad news: they’re only making so many of them, so you better be fast. Here’s why you want one:

  • Improved Vehicle Armor – An up-armor package is mounted on all vehicle types, decreasing the effect of both explosive and penetrating warheads, significantly improving vehicle survivability.
  • Supreme Vehicle Firepower – Additional weapon packages are mounted for the driver of all armored vehicles, greatly expanding the range of targets the vehicle can successfully engage and destroy.
  • Vehicle Motion Sensor – Use this electronics warfare package to locate enemy units in direct proximity to the vehicle.
  • Tracer Dart Pistol – This magnetic dart attaches to any vehicle surface, allowing squad members to track, lock on, and fire rockets onto moving targets even beyond line of sight.
  • M1A1 Submachine Gun – Reliable but heavy this classic weapon is a powerful force in the hands of any Battlefield veteran.
  • M1911 Pistol – Highly customized M1911 are favored for its dependability and the power of its large .45 caliber round.

EA has also released a trailer to commemorate this announcement. Watch it over at Eurogamer.

However, if you are not among the lucky few to pick up one of these fancy limited editions fret not, these unlocks are attainable through regular gameplay. Fair, we say. Game’s out March 2nd in the US, March 5th in Europe for the platforms listed below. You should have learned that by now.

Left 4 Dead 2 Hard Rain campaign gameplay video bonanza [3]

Some videos of ‘Hard Rain’, one of the new campaigns in “Left 4 Dead 2″ have started to hit the net. While we are still trying to stay cautiously optimistic on this one, these videos make it hard for us to contain our lust to rip some zombies to shreds with a chainsaw.
The rainy setting and the moody light(n)ing is a true step up from the predecessor and, to be honest, it creeps us out. It doesn’t creep us out as much as “Paranormal Activity”, but that is probably for the best. We are still sleeping with the lights on.

Check out ‘Hard Rain’ after the break. continue reading →

One Army Of Two: 40th Day Multiplayer Mode is pre-order only – for a month

While “Army of Two” was not exactly packed with multiplayer modes besides the campaign, the sequel seems to come with 3 multiplayer modes — 4 if you preorder.

Gamers who pre-order Army of Two: The 40th Day now will have exclusive access to the game’s all-new explosive multi-player mode, Extraction, at launch. This mode will be unlocked for all other players one month after the game ships.

Extraction pits a team of four players against a series of unique enemy waves as they move from point to point in the ruined city. Players must strategize as a unified team to combat waves of 40th Day Initiative forces while trying to get out alive.

Fairly weird, but I am sure publishers must have some sort of incentive, otherwise they would not be doing these insane things. Also, I don’t really see “Army of Two” as a game, you’d play one month after you finished it, but hey, prove me wrong, EA.
To get the full brief on alle the new multiplayer features, head on over to VE3D.
