Hands-On: Vancouver 2010

The first thing you notice when you see “Vancouver 2010″ running on 360, hooked up to a nice HDTV is, just how beautiful it looks. I know, it’s 2009, so this should come as no surprise, but it’s refreshing to see that the game doesn’t only bank on its license.

So what’s “Vancouver 2010″ all about? Hit the break for our preview.

The game itself is exactly what you expect: It’s basically “Track & Field” 2010-ified. You will press buttons until your fingers hurt. You will have to precisely time button-presses and carefully shift the analogue sticks to remain balanced and on track. And you will get into it: you will scream and yell at the television, at your competition and yourself.

All the game modes we tried, which were many, far too many to list, but included Snowboarding, Super-G, Skeleton, Bobsled and Ski Jumping were compelling, controlled well and genuinely entertaining.

None of them were particularly deep, mind, but all of them will provide ample challenge and some of the modes, such as Ski Jumping, provide a fun, pass-the-controller style multiplayer game.

Of course, this is not a game for you. This is primarily a cash-grab attempt by SEGA, and is, at heart, a mini-game collection for casual gamers at best, but when the games contained within are this compelling and numerous, with production values that are up there with the best of them, at least paying customers don’t get the shaft on this one.
