Ubisoft demanding high scores for early Assassins Creed 2 Reviews?

German magazine Computer Bild Spiele is reporting that Ubisoft has denied them access to a review copy of “Assassin’s Creed 2″ because they refused to assure the publisher that their review-score is going to be at least a ’sehr gut’, which roughly translates to an english/american ‘A’.

A short blurb on the cover of the magazine reads:

ASSASSIN’S CREED 2
SCANDAL!
PUBLISHER WANTED US TO GUARANTEE A SCORE OF ‘SEHR GUT’

In the web-preview of their current issue, the german publication writes:

Our reviews are tough, but fair. We will not give up our independent scores for the sake of a timely review. This holds true for “Assassin’s Creed 2″. The publisher asked us to guarantee the score ’sehr gut’, otherwise we would not receive a review copy, thus we will publish our review in next month’s issue. We’d be more than glad to give the game a ’sehr gut’, but only if it deserves it.

From what we’ve seen and played so far, the game is absolutely bonkers — it’s too bad that Ubisoft decided to taint the game’s image with a stunt like this. This still doesn’t mean that the game won’t be perfectly fine, just be careful once the first reviews start hitting the net.

We will ask Ubisoft for comment on Monday, but I doubt we will get anything back.

are you getting a review copy? =P

Lori 8. 11. 2009 00:01

nope, no ties to Ubi.

Doubledge 8. 11. 2009 21:06

What bothers me is. If it’s a good game why make a threat like that. I’m not going to get it at midnight now. I’ll wait until more reviews come out and see.

So sad 8. 11. 2009 23:30

We had this happen as well; Ubisoft informed us that our review code would be “late” if we didn’t agree to at least an 85% score. We promptly told them to get bent, and that we’d go out buy it ourselves first.

Lori 9. 11. 2009 01:44

Can’t you take the review copy anyway and just… not publish it if it is not as good? Or is that unethical.

Sir Richfield 9. 11. 2009 10:26

Guys – just a small, but important information:
Any german media with “bild” in it is NOT to be taken as a creditable source!
The Bild is our worst example of yellow press and it does not matter if it’s their daily magazine, their weekly or their spinoffs for cars (Autobild) or games (Computerbild Spiele).

I can’t imagine Ubisoft in fear of a bad review from this magazine. I am still to read a negative article about a AAA title.
It’s more believeable that Ubisoft did just not care for the CBS and just sent no copy – and that brought CBS into a rage, now claiming that Ubisoft wanted a higher rating.

Whatever might be the truth, the best way to deal with anything BIld related is to ignore it.

schan 9. 11. 2009 12:04

I don’t care about this. Ratings are important for a games success, they have a very big impact on sales, and something like this just seems obvious. Nobody wants to have bad PR prior to the release of a big game like this. Granted the silly tabloid has provided the undesirable PR they would probably give had they reviewed it none-the-less. My feelings for this game don’t waver. We KNOW it is a good game and the developers really listened to what we wanted changed. Don’t let something stupid like this obstruct you from buying this awesome game.

Sir Richfield 9. 11. 2009 12:15

Yeah – only that we are already paranoid enough to suspect a PR-drone behind posters like schan.
*Knowing* that a game will be good without having played it – I like your crystal ball.
(No I’m not [yet] actually accusing you of being paid to post such things. All those decades of being a gamer just made me too cynical to give a damn about things said about a game prior to release. [For references, read anything Peter Molyneux says] I still enjoy them. But only if they’re well done. It’s only partially my fault that I can only trust my own judgement of that. My rental store loves me for that. Publishers hate me for it – I don’t preoder their games or camp infront of stores – how dare I?)

Lori 9. 11. 2009 13:13

Sir Richfield, I agree, the BILD itself is the worst, but from what I know, Computer Bild (Spiele) is very reputable? Not true?

schan 9. 11. 2009 13:35

No, I’ve seen all of the videos released up til date, I’ve even watched some live stream of someone playing it. I couldn’t handle watching more than half an hour, my body was losing all of it’s water content due to the drool. I’m just stating the fact as rep of thousands of crazy AC1 fans ;D Of course I know this game will be nothing short of amazing! I simply can’t wait…! And a stupid story like this isn’t going to change how I feel. I only hope others feel the same. What is wrong with being supportive of the company who produced such a wonderful game they put so much research, work and effort into? I AM devoted, paid my $150, camping outside the store at 9am for the game I’ve been thinking about *all*l year. Nothing necessarily wrong with that either :)

And if only I *were* getting paid for loving this game, lol, I’d be so rich XD

Lori 9. 11. 2009 13:54

ha, schan, man, when you see the game running “for realz” for the first time, it will blow your mind. the videos were awful compared to the real thing. my jaw hit the floor real hard.

which is why this story sounds so… unbelievable.

Harris 9. 11. 2009 17:05

It’s always the same with those jokers at Ubisoft. And I bet AC II will be just as boring as the first part.

Michael 9. 11. 2009 19:58

Hey there.
Its true, that “Bild” (translated: “Picture”) is a magazine, you can read to laugh, not to get serious news.

but with CBS (Computer Bild Spiele) its a bit different imo, because the reviews of games are “good”, and they often match other magazines with the ratings they give.

And i dont think the storie’s a lie, because they would loose a big bunch of readers if so.

asdasd 9. 11. 2009 21:27

Sehr Gut = Very good

lucas 9. 11. 2009 23:09

For the record Lori, I take back exactly half of all the terrible things I said about Assassin’s Creed The First. once you get to the point that you’ve completed an assassination in each of the cities, it’s almost fun.

I do maintain that Ubisoft should realize that it is just wrong to consistently make the player walk in order to not raise the guards’ ire.

Lori 9. 11. 2009 23:15

It would be a fantastic game if it wasn’t for all that god-damned repetition.

Ponza 11. 11. 2009 19:25

Is anybody from you at the Launch Event of Assassins Creed 2 in Vienna at the Urania Cinema tomorrow?

Lori 11. 11. 2009 20:53

I’m trying to get Gabe in there. maybe he’ll liveblog it.
I doubt it.

Ponza 11. 11. 2009 21:01

Otherwise i could make some pics and write a little review and send in to Gabe if you want to.

Lori 11. 11. 2009 23:41

sure, why not. you can have Singstar Made In Germany as a reward.
or a clove of garlic.

Ponza 12. 11. 2009 13:13

Thanks for your offer but i would do it for free because i like your page and also i am not the biggest singstar fan.

Lori 12. 11. 2009 16:31

what about the garlic?

Ponza 12. 11. 2009 17:06

hm…I’m a bit undecidet about the garlic, but I think I would take it.

Lori 12. 11. 2009 17:33

Gabe shall take care of said payment then.

Ponza 12. 11. 2009 17:58

Would it be ok if I could get Singstar instead of garlic? I know i said I’m not a fan of SingStar but don’t ask…

Lori 12. 11. 2009 18:20

fair enough. ask and ye shall receive. I’ll ask Ubi, maybe they can procure a shirt for you.

Ponza 12. 11. 2009 18:23

Thanks a lot, and if you need a helping hand, you can ask me anytime.

Phaethon 12. 12. 2009 20:13

I’ve been playing this game for several hours, and it is very slow and really less exciting than the original. I bought it based on the fact that the game was getting better reviews than the first and they were saying there was a lot more variety. I’ve seen a bit more variety, but when you only had 3 activities for the first, that’s not saying much. Ubisoft definitely succeeded with over a million sales in the first month, but seeing this puts everything in perspective. Before I thought the reviews were merely being generous as I hadn’t finished it for myself. Live and learn I suppose.

Desolo 31. 12. 2009 03:46

You people really shouldn’t believe everything you read in a magazine. While this could be true, it’s just as likely that a reporter made this up to get attention; one of the oldest scams in the book. I personally thought this game was supirior to the first; it seemed that ubisoft listened to its fans, admitted its faults, and rectified them. A lot of people have struggle with that based on mindless pride; ubisoft, it seems, did not, and I respect them for that. Consequently, my opinion of them won’t change based on a silly little magazine artical.
