Pachter: Borderlands Sent to Die
Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, famed video-game industry analyst, predicts a bleak future for 2K & Gearbox’s baby “Borderlands”: on yesterday’s episode of the Bonus Round, the ‘Pac-Man’ had some harsh words for the innovative roleplaying shooter hybrid:
Sent to die. I think “Borderlands” is the definition of a game that should have had it’s own window and not be up against all this stuff. It’s absolutely the same audience. I don’t think it’s as much an RPG as they would like us to believe. If it’s an RPG, “Dragon Age” is going to kick its butt; and if it’s a shooter, “Call of Duty” or something else is going to kick its butt.
Looks like Randy Pitchford is in for a couple of sleepless nights before October’s NPDs hit… in November. We’re not analysts here at wearetheinternetz, but we love what we played so far, not unconditionally, mind you, it’s not like we’re its parents. Expect our review tomorrow!

Well, the real question is, just how many of “you” are there, willing to spend 60 bucks for Borderlands when they could get… other stuff. Not saying that “other stuff” is better, but no one can deny that to the “masses” Brütal Legend, Uncharted 2, MW2 and Left 4 Dead 2 are infinitely more present. |

*raises hand* I like the idea behind RPGs (leveling up, gaining new skills, weapons, etc.), but could never sit down and actually play an RPG (except for Eternal Sonata). So I’m very much interested in how Borderlands can incorporate the RPG element, while at the same time, still keep it *fun*… for me :D |

I think this is the second bullcrap prediction by Michael Pachter in the span of 2 days… Michael Pachter is wrong much MORE than he is right and I think we should ignore him altogether |

For what it’s worth, it seems everybody is buying this game. Everywhere I go people are going out to buy it and really excited, too. |

Call me a pessimist, but I can see this game selling really well at first, and then trickling to a dead stop. If people find its not the game they wanted, they’ll stop playing, and won’t talk their friends into buying it, etc. All the reviews do kind of sing the tune of “it’s really good if you know what to expect.” |

not sure about Borderlands, but I am 100% positive that Brütal Legend will have that fate. |

Picked it up this morning for $40, (yes Canada), and it was selling out quickly. At that price I figured why not. I’ve played it for a couple hours before I had to go to work, and guess what, it’s pretty damn fun. Co-Op MP is gonna be a blast, and you can’t get that with MW2 can you? Pachter is a douche anyway, diarrhea of the mouth I say… |

you can’t get that with MW2 can you? well definitely not the way Borderlands offers it, that is correct. other than that, I am glad my brothers in the great white north are warming up to Borderlands for 40 dollars. Must be Jess’ influence. |

So now that Borderlands is selling so well they are having supply issues, I wonder what this “genius” thinks now. What an idiot. Do these “analysts” not realize yet that people can, and do, buy more than one game at a time? These aren’t cars, or houses. This would be like saying the Transformers DVD won’t sell well because Harry Potter is releasing at the same time. It’s just stupid. Just proves yet again that suits can’t get their head around video games to save their life. The game is getting amazing word of mouth and selling like hotcakes…oops, guess you predicted wrong. |

To be fair, this interview WAS conducted more than a month ago and Mr. Pachter was put on the spot. He is a very smart man, Matt, just because his predictions are mostly wrong does not mean he does not understand the industry. I think there was a huge chance for Borderlands to literally be overlooked inbetween the Uncharted 2 circle-jerk that’s going on and the ridic anticipation and hyper around Modern Warfare 2. Just be happy, he was wrong, but don’t hate on Mr. Pachter so much. |

Do what? He’s a smart man, but he’s still mostly wrong, but he understands the industry so it’s okay. Are you daft? You can’t be smart, and know the industry, and be wrong most of the time. Those are mutually exclusive states. If one is wrong most of the time, it’s because you are either dumb, don’t understand the industry, or a combination of both. It’s flat bad analysis, and shouldn’t be defended or hyped. If someone is wrong more than they are right, they shouldn’t be listened to anymore. They surely shouldn’t be defended as “very smart” and “understanding of the industry”. If I was wrong even a fraction of how much I was right at work, I’d be fired. |

Well Matt, let me ask you this: do you have to predict the future at work? |

I’d say it should appeal to those people who don’t fit fully in either of those niches. people like me. With any luck it will be the game I wanted Fallout 3 to be.
