Uncharted 2’s tech wizardry analyzed

If you’re up for a little reading, Eurogamer has you covered: Their Digital Foundry blog has just posted a 3 page tech analysis for “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”. They’re just a wee bit in a awe:

Thus far, the game’s tech has aced every conceivable challenge thrown at it. The question is really whether there’s actually anything from a performance perspective that we don’t like about this demo?

Well, is there? — Yes, there is. It seems that Naughty Dog’s choice to enable triple buffering in the game to eliminate tearing has come at a price:

I set about measuring controller response in both Uncharted games, and came up with results of 100ms for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (effectively the fastest a 30FPS game can react), up against 133ms in Uncharted 2

A small price to pay to get rid of the artifacting caused by an uneven frame-rate.
The article is well worth a read for anyone who can tell the difference between SSAO and FSAA and those who aspire to. Or if you want to kill a couple of minutes between breakfast and brunch.
