The playful side of the Zune HD

The release of Microsoft’s new Zune HD is upon the US, and just like Apple’s iPod Touch, Microsoft aims to position the device as a bona fide portable gaming platform.

“Later this year, Zune plans to release free applications such as Twitter for Zune and Facebook for Zune, in addition to fun 3-D games such as “Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition,” “Vans Sk8: Pool Service” and “Audiosurf(TM) Tilt.” Games can be added to Zune HD via Zune Marketplace over the Wi-Fi connection or when connected to the Zune PC software.”

It seems that Microsoft is taking a different route with it’s PMP than Apple. Instead of distributing the SDK freely, most apps will be developed in house or “in close co-operatin with third parties”. No fart apps, then.
It’s also note-worthy, that for the time being, these apps will be free.

The XNA Game Studio software allows targeting the Zune. This makes it possible to write games for it the same way you can do with the Xbox 360 at the moment.

yeah but that doesn’t mean it will be on the Marketplace…. so it’s for self-consumption only.
