GamesCom 09: Aliens vs Predator
I got a chance to take a peak at “Aliens vs Predator” in Cologne. We were finally shown some work-in-progress Aliens gameplay. Find out more!
After running through the E3 Marines demo real quick, the Rebellion guys decided it was finally time to let the slimy, skinny, hairless cat out of the bag:
Strong green hues and a blurry fish-eye lens are what makes up the current look of the Aliens’ gameplay in AVP — it might change, still, the game is still work-in-progress. It is disorienting, to say the least, but all fitting with the primal and ferocious feel one has come to expect of playing an Alien.
The gameplay is very similar to a “Splinter Cell” or even “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. You are required to exercise extreme caution as you sneak past Marines, take them down by leaping at them from afar or simply lurk in the shadows only to surprise one of the unprepared humans and then do really nasty things to them with your tail. I will spare you the graphic detail, I would assume the gratuitous violence is not as much work-in-progress but a feature essential to the general AVP-atmosphere.
The AI didn’t seem to hold up very well to the strategic lynching, but we were told it was still highly work-in-progress.
To accomplish this, you can still climb on walls, there is even a nifty little orientation indicator, as well as lunge yourself to any platform your extremities will stick to.
As it stands right now the game celebrates it’s heritage with just enough respect, but it remains to be seen if it will ignite the same innovation in the genre as it’s predecessor. The game is still work-in-progress.
