GamesCom 09: Borderlands

Randy Pitchford is all smiles when he talks about his baby, “Borderlands”. It’s really hard to argue with him, the game looks like more fun then any one man can handle.

The 4 player co-op role-playing shooter brings a lot to the table. It really is the best of both worlds.

Aiming for the head might be more effective. Just sayin’.

“You will not find dialogue trees here”, says Pitchford, stressing that they did not just take everything that encompasses a modern RPG and called it a day. Every element of the game was carefully evaluated to make the game as fun as possible.

Today, we are being shown a few missions played in co-operative mode, which in “Borderlands” basically means that your friends decided to join you. It’s fully drop-in, drop-out all the time, stresses Pitchford. The game will adjust the difficulty according to the amount of players, yet the core-experience remains the same, you can play the game from start to finish with up to 4 players without having to compromise in terms of story, even though Pitchford is happy to admit that the story is there and interesting, but is ultimately irrelevant.

Here in my car I feel safest of all

All told, gameplay is all that matters, and “Borderlands” delivers. The colors truly pop, the HUD is easy to decipher, the “World of Warcraft”-style damage indicators are comically frequent and the whole game is all laughs. Fantastic, really.

Pitchford does not hesitate to reminds us, just how big of a risk they are taking with Borderlands. The crazy art-style, the attitude, launching a new IP in this holiday season. This could be huge — or a total disaster.
