Publisher Spotlight: SEGA

Lately, SEGA has not exactly been the most reliable publisher in terms of releasing quality games; on the other hand, niche titles like Valkyria Chronicles, which were universally acclaimed both critically and personally, have suffered extremely poor sales.
However, this year seems to be a turning point for the beloved japanese publisher, bringing about more than one AAA next-gen title and probably the Wii game of the year. (Here’s a hint, it is not Sonic and the Black Knight)

After the jump, we will look at SEGA’s prime offerings for 2009!

Madworld (Wii)

The Wii-audience has been starving for hardcore games lately, so it comes as no surprise that MadWorld is being heralded as the Wii’s first real hardcore title in 2009 (Sorry, HOTD Overkill). The first release from Platinum Games, mostly consisting of Clover Studios (Okami) alumni, has players pitted as Jack in a brutal game-show called Death Watch, where your main objective is to fight for survival and ranking up stylish kills as you go.
We can only hope this game will catch on with owners of Nintendo’s system, as this could turn out to be a detrimental title for the future of the software available on the system.
Release: NA 10th of March, EU 20th of March

Bayonetta (Xbox 360, PS3)

Bayonetta, from the Hideki Kamiya, creator of Devil May Cry, is an action game that revolves around a Palin-look alike fighting hordes of demons — conveniently disguised as angels — using guns and… her hair. Clearly, this game will be all kinds of over the top and ridiculous and it should be an enjoyable ride for fans of Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry.
No release date has been announced yet.

The Conduit (Wii)

The Conduit is a first-person shooter that prides itself in pretty graphics, customization and, yet again, servicing the Wii’s hardcore audience. Developed by High Voltage Software, this game is the latest addition to SEGA’s 2009 lineup. It remains to be seen, if a hardcore-shooter with questionable art-direction and a total lack of personality will do on the system.
The game releases this summer.

2009, the year of SEGA?

Probably not, but all in all, it has to be said that SEGA has severely upped it’s game from last year, creating a healthy buzz around all of it’s major titles and they might even have a system seller on their hand with MadWorld — not that the Wii needs to sell more.
